I encountered some very strange erb behaviors when the you comments in the templates. For example:

<% if true %>
  Hi from Rails!
<% end # hi from rails %>

The solution: if you want to put comments in ERB templates use this syntax:

<% if true %>
  Hi from Rails!
<% end %>
<%# hi from rails %>
